What makes this CD worth every penny is the sound quality, which is second only to vinyl in my opinion. It will certainly please any audiophile. The album itself is really three complete albums recorded for the Transition label over a one year period between December 2, 1955 and December 8, 1956. Not only does this feature some out-of-print Donald Byrd albums, all of which also feature Doug Watkins on bass, but it also contains Watkins' debut album as a leader.I will not repeat the track list here because you can find it (and sound samples representing the music, but not the sound quality) on an MP3 version of this album at Donald Byrd And Doug Watkins - The Transition Sessions. Note that while that album has 24-bit mastering there is still a certain amount of loss that is associated with the MP3 format. The following is background information about the tracks contained in this album because they are somewhat special given their rarity.DISC ONE: the first six tracks comprise the album titled Bird's Eye View that was recorded in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA on December 2, 1955. This album features a front line of Byrd and Joe Gordon on trumpet (Gordon is only on the first four tracks), Hank Mobley on tenor on tracks 1, 4 and 5, and backed by Horace Silver on piano, Watkins on bass and Art Blakey on drums.Tracks 7 through 10, and 6 and 7 on DISC TWO are the album titled Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill that was recorded at Steve Fassett's home in the Beacon Hill section of Boston on May 7, 1956. This features Byrd on trumpet backed by Ray Santisi on piano, Watkins on bass and Jimmy Zitano on drums.DISC TWO starts off with tracks 1 through 5 comprising Watkins' debut album as a leader titled Watkins At Large. It was recorded in NYC on December 8, 1956 and features Donald Byrd on trumpet accompanied by Hank Mobley on tenor sax, with Duke Jordan on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums (Panonica is Donald Byrd, backed by Duke Jordan, Watkins and Art Taylor.)The last two tracks go with tracks 7 through 10 on Disc One from the album titled Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill.
