Description

A searing account of a father’s struggle to save his remarkable son from a rare heart condition that threatens his life—“a powerful and lyric portrait of a son and a vibrant family” (Toni Morrison).Damon Weber is a brilliant kid—a skilled actor and a natural leader at school. Born with a congenital heart defect that required surgery when he was a baby, Damon’s spirit and independence have always been a source of pride to his parents, who vigilantly look for any signs of danger. Unbowed by frequent medical checkups, Damon proves to be a talent on stage, appears in David Milch’s HBO series Deadwood, and maintains an active social life, whenever he has the energy. But running through Damon’s coming-of-age in the shadow of affliction is another story: his father Doron’s relentless search for answers in a race against time. Immortal Bird is a stirring, gorgeously written memoir of a father’s fight to save his son’s life.

I have a 13 year old son who has also survived the initial surgeries for kids with a single ventricle heart defects. This book was well written and showed the strain this illness puts on every family, while also showing how deeply loved and treasured this young man was, as well as how the family strived to give him a "normal" life regardless of what cards they were dealt. Anyone who said this father was conceited or rude, has never had to fight for a sick child. Even in the best circumstances, at the worlds best hospitals, the squeeky wheel gets the oil, so I definitely identified with his feelings of needing to get all the information and make the best decisions for an illness that noone really knows how to treat in the long term. I saw some people criticize the author for his luxurious lifestyle and vacation locations - but they were not what the story was meant to be about at all - when reading in context with having to raise a whole family including a very sick child, their reviews came accros as a bit bitter and envious - When you are raising a kid with such a significant illness, your job as a parent is to watch them like a hawk and look for signs that this little cough or the paleness one day is a one off bad day, or the road to another hospitalization / life threatening emergency.I would not wish this on my worst enemy. The people who criticized his adoration of his child, probably need to take a step back and remember that each day is NOT a gift to some children and they should probably look at their child and be thankful for their health and happiness. I challenge every parent of a healthy child to take a step in "our" shoes for one day and see if their view of the world isn't changed just a little. Mr. Weber was very brave for putting his thoughts, feelings and adoration of his fantastic son onto paper and allowing others to see what we are all going through. Thank you Weber family.
